Artist's Statement
A fine line lies between being in the spotlight, front and center, and stepping out of your comfort zone. Using myself as a subject forces an audience, including me, to dissect all of my flaws and question who I really am. [Self] Portraits are favored, as what you interact with can hold a reflection of yourself. My work centers around self-exploration, learning who I am and what that means, whether it be through new mediums or new content. Reliance on bright colors is essential to express my bubbly personality, but also to hide my insecurities and my deep thoughts. Semi-realistic approaches are sought after as a reminder that nothing can ever be re-created, nor can something be perfected. Digital media almost makes serious content more comical, acting like a facade to everyone else. No one knows you better than yourself, but if you have yet to determine who you really are, then are you really who you seem to be? - Karen Armenta
